I was Told There’d be Cake
By Sloan Crosley
My Rating: 3 Stars
This was a surprising find. I often look for humor books. They aren’t actually that difficult to find, but it can be hard to find one where it’s quirkiness makes it funny. That’s what I loved about this book it’s simple in it’s humor and gentle with it’s laughs. Does this sound strange to you? What I mean to say is that the humor and laughs you’ll find in this book are subtle and unobtrusive. It’s not the in-your-face kind of humor that people have come to expect. You have to read between the lines just a bit and maybe take a moment to let the subtle sarcasm of Crosley’s words seep in. Let them filter through your brain and mingle with your thoughts. Only then will you appreciate this book.
Filled with countless essays about what it’s like to be a young urbanite and just trying to find your way through the world; to be successful and adultesque in today’s world. In reading this you’re sure to find at least one essay you can relate to and I’m sure you’ll give a chuckle or two at them before moving onto Crosley’s next tidbit of humor.
If you are looking for a humorous book that’s subtle and will give you hours of enjoyment, I highly recommend this “I was Told There’d be Cake” by Sloane Crosley. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
